The physical properties
 
It’s a hydrated amorphous form of the silica (SiO2.NH2O) whose water content ranges from the 3 to 20% by weight. It is classified as a mineraloid because of its amorphous character. Opal is most commonly found with the rocks like limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl, and basalt and deposited at a relatively lower temperature. It is found in the varying hues of the colors like white, grey, fire, magenta, rose, pink, slate,  red, orange, yellow, green, blue, olive, brown, and black. Green opals are found most commonly whereas the black ones are very rare. Its optical density varies from the opaque to translucent.
